The 3000 Song Challenge (3KSC)

One day, I had a big dream. I wanted to discover new songs… mostly those from artists in the Christian and Gospel genres.

That’s a very simple desire, right? But there were more songs than I had room to listen to, it felt like. And so, in the years 2020 and 2021, I was adding songs to a queue in hopes to put them on a playlist and listen to them some day. I did, but I was always so slow because there would be a handful of new songs released each week, and I wanted to listen to those too. By 2023, I hadn’t finished off that list.

Then, one day in December 2023, I had an idea. I dreamt bigger than I had in the past. I was listening to Spotify on the free plan at that time, and I decided to take a three month free trial of Premium to listen to music continuously without hearing the ads. With that, I could listen on the phone app to playlists. I had my method.

It was somewhat of a New Year’s Resolution, a new start, or a journey that I could start at the beginning of the year 2024. It was one that I would definitely have to accomplish… because I wanted to get the most out of the three free months of a premium account.

I decided to do this… what I called the 3000 Song Challenge (abbreviated as 3KSC). That’s the term I put down as I divided my songs remaining into playlists. I would make 100 playlists with 30 songs in each of them, so that I could listen to roughly one playlist per day over that three month period. (In reality, I didn’t stick to one playlist a day. I usually listened to several playlists over a few days, and then the next few days I would replay my favorite songs from those playlists… starting with those that stood out to me the most.) I didn’t want to just keep it to music I had saved from 2020 and 2021, so I also looked through Spotify’s new music weekly feature playlists or popular new music release websites and went down the line to add those songs too. The playlists became a mix of old and new, with many different styles, song lengths, and artists.

I was going to be listening to music for several hours each day anyway in the wintertime, so I decided to direct my time toward a certain goal. I started it on January 1, 2024, and I finished it on March 20, 2024. Was it a waste of time? Some of it might have been, but it was lovely to be able to see myself get all the way to 100. My goal was to listen to each song once. I then took the ones that I liked the most and put them on a “favorites” playlist and replayed those from time to time. Those songs helped uplift me throughout the wintertime when planning for the rest of the year ahead.

I put this here, at the beginning of 2025, with the sense that someday, someone would be daring enough to click on them and look at them.

Or, if you’re still looking for a New Year’s Resolution… one that is achievable if you just put in the time and don’t give up halfway through, look here. This challenge has no tricks… just listen through 3000 songs. I’m sure that with 3000 songs, you can learn something valuable. (I’m sure that with one song, you can learn something valuable… but also with doing that 3000 times, you can. I don’t know how to multiply value by 3000 yet so I’ll just stick with that.)

There is one setback that I forgot to mention above. Some of the songs in these playlists aren’t available anymore, so there are less than 3000 working songs. There are still 3000 on the playlists, but I don’t think they can all be played. To make up for the loss, I’ll put three bonus playlists here so that the number of working songs can still get up to 3000.
