“We fell on hard times, and we didn’t have a way out.” That’s what you might be saying. Think about desperate people trying to find their way to greatness and only seeing one option, put their all into it. They climbed up the wall where the steps were made… and instead of going through the wall (they weren’t powerful enough), they had to find the steps to jump over it. Or maybe they used an external weapon to push through it.
That is proof that you could be brought out of your pain and your loneliness, one step at a time. I’ve sensed this for a while, I’ve just needed some more proof. And now, the way to find the proof is to ask for people’s testimony… not focusing on being saved by God or being given freedom (because they themselves don’t think in salvation-type language), but this time about the meaning of video games.
So I am switching gears and talking about video games now. To start out, I decided to keep this non-personal and choose a video game that I know somewhat about but don’t have an abundance of experience playing: Fortnite. I met with a group of college students who were passionate about Fortnite, and I asked them to explain to me their deepest connections and what made Fortnite so special to them. I will be documenting those interviews and synthesizing the ideas to come to an indefinite conclusion.
Maybe your world exists without Fortnite, and maybe my world exists without it. But for some, every hope, dream, and promise they can find in Fortnite. It is their “EVERYTHING.” It almost compiles the role of God. Maybe I should say that putting Fortnite as God might be a bad idea (because God told us not to serve the idol before Him), but we see the similarities and realize how God can work through Fortnite as well (if God comes first).
This might seem unconventional or strange to write about, in this context, especially on a project titled UNCOVERING THE MUSIC, but there’s more to the uncovering than you might expect.
With Fortnite, and with the believers who trust that Fortnite can brighten up a life, I pray that you all find what you are looking for… if that is your pathway to healing.
